Small Group Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT ARE SMALL GROUPS
Small Groups are small gatherings of
Cornerstone members and their friends meeting on any topic imaginable.
That's right! There are several groups--each built around specific
interests, stages of life, needs and strengths of its members. You'll
find Bible studies, book groups, prayer groups, groups for men, women,
couples and singles. You'll find groups to help you with finances,
strengthening your marriage, improving your parenting skills and much
more.
We also have Support/Recovery Groups for those struggling with
alcoholism, addictions, divorce, depression, grief and disabilities. Small groups create an "extended family" atmosphere. Here, relationships
run deep and meaningful friendships can be made. Within small groups
there are opportunities to ask questions, discuss, laugh, cry and/or to
pray with each other in a safe, non-threatening and informal
atmosphere. In Small Groups, people connect with one another in order to
grow mentally, emotionally, relationally and spiritually. Small Groups are places of belonging as well as welcoming places for
newcomers. Each Groups exists as a small community where the members
care for one another, learn together and find ways to serve their
neighbors. In our Groups you will find growth, trust and maturing where
the Bible is applied to everyday living.
We like to refer to these four words to describe Small Groups at Cornerstone:
CONNECT
We all need to connect with other people and to connect to God.
Small Groups are a great place to meet and connect with others who have
common life experiences, hobbies, passions and interests.
GROW
We all need to be nourished with God's word, fellowship and
prayer. Small Groups are a safe place to grow with others and to grow
closer to God.
CARE
We all need support and care from others. small Groups are an
incredible place for that. At times, we need to give and other times we
need to receive. We also have Small Groups that do local outreach
ministries and mission work giving you the opportunity to share God's
love and care for others outside of Cornerstone.
CELEBRATE
We celebrate all that God has done for us through expressions of prayer, praise, singing and worship.
WHY SHOULD I JOIN A SMALL GROUP?
Small Groups are the heart and soul of
Cornerstone Christian Fellowship. Most people tell us they are drawn to
our church by the great messages and worship music. But, as important
as these two pieces are, they are not enough. The reality is we all
need personal, genuine relationships with others. We need trusted
friends who know us - and whom we can turn to in times of need. That is
why we strongly encourage everyone who calls Cornerstone "home" to be
part of a Small Group. We believe that Small Groups will help you to:
Begin to really feel like part of God's family
Understand the Bible better
Grow in your understanding of prayer
Be able to handle stress and pressure better
Have a natural way to share Christ with friends, relatives and work associates
Develop leadership skills you never knew you had
Deepen your understanding of worship
Build lasting relationships
Small groups are an essential part of Cornerstone Christian
Fellowship. Our experience has taught us that the most significant life
change happens within the context of a small community of people who
use their gifts and life experiences to encourage, challenge and serve
one another.
We believe small groups of people sharing life and Christ together
is how God designed us to live in community. We can see an example of
this by looking at Jesus Christ's own life with his disciples. They ate
together, laughed together and wept together. They simply “did” life
together. It is our prayer that everyone who calls Cornerstone home
will join a Small Group and find the benefits of living life in
community as God designed it for us.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT A SMALL GROUP MEETING?
The great thing about the various groups is that they are all
different. The format and atmosphere for the “Married with Young Kid's”
group will be different than the group that meets to study the book of
Hebrews. Once you find a Group you're interested in shoot them an email
or give them a call and they'll give you all the info you need. Groups
typically begin with an icebreaker question...something to get everyone
talking and sharing a bit about themselves. The "meat" of the meeting
is a Bible or topical study usually lasting 30-40 minutes. Studies may
also include a DVD segment, questions and discussion. You may also find
Individuals sharing praises and prayer requests. The groups usually end
with a social time with some great food!

although there are several that meet at coffee shops and even some
local businesses. Where the group meets is completely up to the group!
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN SMALL GROUPS?
Small Groups are open to anyone--whether you attend Cornerstone or not.
WILL I BE EXPECTED TO PRAY OUT LOUD?
This is always up to you! Many people are
hesitant to pray in front of others, especially in a large church. In a
Small Group of 10 to 12, you will learn to participate in prayer by
having a conversation together with God. No one is pressured to pray,
but as you become comfortable, you'll be able to join with others in
prayer. There are many promises in the Bible related to group prayer.
When we pray with a few others, we are drawn together and we find
answers to the needs in our lives.
DO I HAVE TO KNOW A LOT ABOUT THE BIBLE?
No. That's what Small groups are all about - You are in encouraged get involved and get to know and understand the Bible better.
